The Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) organized a two-hour walk to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS in the Western Region. The walk started at the entrance to the Takoradi Technical Institute and ended at the Effia Police Park, where adults and children received education on new pathogens and ways to prevent or abstain from sexual activity. Celebrities who joined schoolchildren and other community members in the walk to commemorate AIDS Day under the theme “Let Communities Lead” included Ms. Joyce Begyina, the Effia Kwesimintsin Municipal Assembly Health Director, the Chief of Apremdo, Nana Egya Kwamena XI, and Ms. Eva Ankrah from Hurds Foundation.

The youth were advised to restrain their sexual inclination by Apremdo Chief Nana Egya Kwamena XI.

In his view, young people who are vital to these processes must use all that they can to safeguard their lives from the devastating effects of HIV and AIDS. Communities need physically healthy individuals to support their development goals.

According to Ms. Begyina, youth illnesses account for 7% of all new infections and are on the rise.

She recommended widespread education and emphasized the serious exposure risks faced by female sex workers in order to protect the girl child.
